A ‘Slightly Over Engineered’ Fence Gate
Are two Hinges better than one?
For this homeowner, no gate would fail to contain an adventurous dog, a conventional gate would introduce many ways to carelessly hurt oneself, a narrower gate would impede their work, and a double “saloon style” gate would require both hands to operate, a major disqualification.
Managing Elevation
Not the first thing to come to mind when making a simple gate. In addition to a medium slope, these stairs presented a footing/tripping hazard and would also cause a gate that opened inward to run aground.
Bridging the Gap
In order to work with the existing fence line and fill the gap over a wide set of stairs, as well as make sure such a gate would not become a future ‘bottleneck’ to residents moving large items, posts were kept in their original place.
In practice, this allows for both an effective privacy fence and also a wide and welcoming point of entry.
